You and Your Patients Brain Health…What You Can Be Doing Now

The brain is the most complex organ in the body. It controls thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger and every process that regulates the body. Without an adequately functioning brain people become a shell of a human. 

Environment, lifestyle choices and genetics are directly correlated with brain health. What is not being taught is how making choices and taking action can assist with the maintenance of brain function, as well as increase quality of life, health span and longevity.

As the medical professional who likely sees and spends the greatest amount of time with patients, dental hygienists are perfectly positioned to share this information. In fact, hygienists have an obligation to provide information regarding the causation relationship poor oral health has brain health.

Bio: Angie Stone, RDH, BS, began her career in the United States Navy as a Dental Technician. Her assigned mission was to help keep her fellow sailors dentally ready for deployment. After her enlistment, she completed a degree in dental hygiene and a subsequent BS in psychology. Shortly thereafter she was assigned to another mission. This one she didn’t pick. It picked her. Through personal and professional experiences, she has spent the last 19 years focused on dental health needs of elders in her practice and community. Through her company, amazon bestselling book “Dying From Dirty Teeth”, and lectures across the country and internationally, she has made an impact in how elders are understood and cared for in and by the dental profession.
