White Lesions of the Oral Mucosa. How to recognize Friend from Foe. (LIVE STREAM)

December 7, 2023 @ 7:00 pm 10:00 pm EST

$125 3 CE credits

The oral mucosa is often eloquently described as being “Coral Pink”. In each of our professional experiences however, we have seen an extensive variety and variation to this statement. Changes to the oral mucosa that result in a “white” appearance are a result of myriad factors ranging from simple chronic friction to precancer and cancer. Immediately, one can reason that management will differ vastly. Management will depend entirely on the diagnosis. While in some lesions the diagnosis is straight forward and clinical, in others, a biopsy may be required. In this course, participants will see many examples of all possible white lesions of the oral mucosa. The presentation will include salient clinical features of each with information related to whether a biopsy is required and what features help to arrive at a final diagnosis. Finally, information related to management of these lesions will also be presented. Audience interaction and sharing of cases of interest (HIPPA compliant) to enhance learning would be enthusiastically welcomed.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • recognize that there are many causes of white lesions in the oral cavity.
  • recognize that oral white lesions may also be a result of systemic disease.
  • understand that the range of this oral mucosal alteration may extend from benign asymptomatic variation of normal to precancer and aggressive malignancies that are potentially life altering.
  • learn how to recognize lesions from their clinical presentation.
  • involve in the decision-making process to biopsy and interpret the report for ongoing management.
  • also learn simple therapeutic methods related to prescribing of medications in the management of some of these lesions.
