Treating the LGBTQIA+ Care for the Dental Team

Course Description:
Dr. Barrera’s course will discuss topics such as diversity, LGBTQ+ health
disparities and concerns, HIV and AIDS, and HPV and cancer. He will discuss
what it means to be transgender and treating the transgender patient. He will
discuss what needs to change and how to improve treatment of the LGBTQ+
community.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to:
• Increase their awareness and understanding of the LGBTQ+ community
• Recognize common LGBTQ+ terms and definitions
• Study the health disparities faced by the LGBTQ+ community
• Learn about the medical, emotional, and physical changes that
transgender individuals go through to better care for these patients
• Examine ways to become a better ally dentist
Speaker: Dr. Alex Barrera
Dr. Alex Barrera practices at Legacy Community Health Center in Houston, Texas and is a member of various organizations including the American Dental Association, Hispanic Dental Association, Greater Houston Dental Association, and the Houston Equality Dental Network. He currently serves as President of the Houston Equality Dental Network and as a Wellness Ambassador with the American Dental Association. He was recognized by Incisal Edge Magazine as one of the Top 40 Dentists Under 40 in 2021 and was awarded the Health Equity Hero award by DentaQuest in 2022. He is a graduate of the ADA’s Institute for Diversity in Leadership and uses his platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ health and to educate dental professionals on how to be better allies for the queer community.
