COURSE SUMMARY:  Evidence based research has revealed the primal connection that exists between our brain and our gut. The Gut-Brain-Microbiota Axis also known as the Enteric Nervous System or “Second brain” is a network of neurons that monitors the digestive system and communicates with the gut microbiota . This communication plays a critical role in the modulation of the immune system, hormones, and organ systems. When one or more systems are compromised it may lead to chronic disease diagnoses impacting oral health.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Define the gut-brain-microbiota axis.
  • Describe its role in modulating inflammation, metabolism, stress, mood, and appetite.
  • Understand the significance of nutrition and digestion to oral health.
  • Know the importance of nutrition to the integrity of the oral cavity and impact of oral disease on nutritional status.
