Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect

COURSE SUMMARY:  A webinar developed to assist dental clinicians in recognizing the signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 

  • Discuss the history and background of child abuse and neglect.
  • Report the incidence of child abuse and neglect.
  • Identify the problem from a dental provider perspective.
  • Recognize behavioral health issues and effects.
  • Describe the clinician’s role in recognizing, reporting, and referring victims.
  • Cite clinical and intra-oral pathology of physical and sexual abuse.
  • Know when, how, where to report suspected abuse.
  • Understand legal responsibilities of mandated reporters.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Kirsten Roling, DDS is the Chief Education Officer for Dental CE Academy administered by Virtual Dontics®. She completed dental school training at the University of California, San Francisco; during the height of the HIV/AIDS Pandemic. Dr. Roling is credited as an early pioneer of Teledentistry. Her clinical practice spans pediatrics to geriatrics. Previously an Assistant Clinical Professor, UCSF; and Public Health Preceptor, Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, Dr. Roling also held the position as Chief for the Office of Oral Health, Maricopa County, Department of Public Health where she administed the nation’s largest pediatric oral health prevention programs for the third largest U.S. public health department. As a mobile dental provider, she commanded a large teledentistry practice to treat homebound geriatric patients. She is a recipient of the Pediatric Oral Health Access Program (POHAP) scholarship and provided dental services pro bono to at risk infants and foster children. She has completed certification through the American Dental Education Association in conjunction with the Academy of Academy Leadership and Institute for Allied Health Educators “Advances in Educational Methodology.” In 2017 she was published in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry, and in 2018 interviewed on National Public Radio.
