Oral Manifestations of Systemic Conditions
March 6 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm EST
Course Description:
Careful examination of the oral cavity may reveal findings indicative of an underlying systemic condition, allowing for early diagnosis and treatment. It is important that our evaluation include: mucosal changes, periodontal inflammation, bleeding and the general condition of the teeth.
Oral examination can reveal signs and symptoms of immunologic diseases, endocrinopathies, hematologic conditions, systemic infections, and nutritional disorders. We have the opportunity to work with physicians and specialists regarding the relationship between systemic and oral health and coordinate care as indicated. Many systemic diseases manifest first in the mouth and may be overlooked or considered to be a common oral lesion such as ulcers.
This course will review important oral manifestations associated with systemic disorders such as:
- Anemia
- Lichen planus
- Lupus Erythematosus
- Pemphigus Vulgaris
- Chron’s Disease
- Behcet’s Syndrome
- Addison’s Disease
- Diabetes Mellitus
- HIV
- Thrombocytopenia
- Leukemia
- Bulimia
This course will discuss the possible differential diagnoses of oral lesions associated with systemic conditions and when to refer patients to a specialist.
After completing this course, the clinician will be able to:
- Describe systemic conditions present with oral, red, white, and ulcerative lesions.
- Understand the significance of conditions affecting the tongue.
- Describe systemic conditions that present with periodontal bleeding and inflammation.
- Understand the clinical presentation of bulimia vs GERD
- Understand how conditions affecting the oral mucosa may also affect the skin and other organ systems.
- Understand the oral findings of individuals with blood disorders.
