Navigating Substance Use Disorder among Oral Health Professionals

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a significant concern across health care, including within the oral health profession. And understanding its complexity requires an interdisciplinary approach.
This webinar will provide insights from a diverse panel, including a licensed clinical social worker and a pharmacist, that will discuss the neuroscience behind addiction, the prevalence of addiction, and its manifestations among oral health professionals. They will also discuss how oral health professionals can create supportive environments for their colleagues and their patients and the responsibility of reporting colleagues under the influence, as stipulated by the American Dental Association’s Code of Ethics.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the key indicators and signs of substance use disorder prevalent among oral health professionals.
- Describe the underlying neuroscience of addiction and its unique relevance and manifestations within the oral health community.
- Generate strategies for creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment in dental practices while also adhering to the American Dental Association’s Code of Ethics.
