GERD – Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Course Description:
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the description for the physiological causes, symptoms and complications resulting from acid reflux. While acid reflux is only a mild annoyance for many people, it can cause severe pain and medical complications for millions of people. Heartburn is estimated to effect more that 60 million Americans at least once each month and as many as 15 million individuals on a daily basis.
This course will examine the causes of GERD as well the medical complications that result from acid reflux. This course will also review the various recommendations to reduce or cure GERD including lifestyle modifications, medications and surgical therapies. Included will be a section on the possible dental complications caused by GERD.
After completing this course, the clinician will be able to:
- Identify the most common signs and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
- Describe the physiologic factors that cause GERD to occur.
- Identify the most common medical complications that can result from GERD.
- Discuss lifestyle modifications recommended to reduce the symptoms of GERD.
- Describe the various prescription and OTC medications used to treat GERD.
- Describe the most common surgical approaches to eliminate GERD.
