The benefits of preventive dentistry is no longer understood to be localized to the mouth and centered around the prevention of tooth decay and gum disease. Current research has established a direct link between oral and systemic health, suggesting preventive dentistry is in fact, preventative medicine. Understanding the dental professional’s role in disease and risk management is critical to successfully implementing a system to diagnose and treat oral conditions with systemic health implications.
