DRUG ADDICTION + OPIOIDS

Course Description:
This course will cover various Schedule II opioids and other commonly taken drugs: amphetamines, cocaine, opioids, sedatives & hypnotics, and alcohol. For each drug, the course will address common examples, pathophysiology, acute/chronic effects, signs and symptoms, toxicity and overdose, withdrawal, and complications with dental treatment. We will discuss practices for pain management in dentistry and regulatory requirements for prescribers and dispensers. We will also address procedures for managing vulnerable or substance use disorder patients.
After completing this course, the clinician will be able to:
- Understand the basic physiology of drugs.
- Determine the best practices for pain management in dentistry.
- Know the regulatory requirements for prescribers/dispensers.
- Know the procedures for managing vulnerable or substance disorder patients.
- Review the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems and how drugs effect each system.
- Review the pathophysiology of methamphetamine, cocaine, opioids, sedatives and alcohol.
- Review opioid receptors, where they are found and how they are affected with opioid use.
- Understand GABA’s role and how it is affected by sedatives and alcohol.
- Review withdrawal, acute and chronic symptoms, from cocaine, meth, sedatives and opioids, and alcohol.
