DEA MATE Part 1: Act Compliance and DEA Training for Safe Prescribing of Opioids

As of June 27, 2023, Dental practitioners will need to check a box on their online DEA registration form attesting that they have completed 8-hours of training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.


This course will describe details of the MATE Act, elaborate on legal guidelines established by dental boards for counseling patients on proper storage and safe disposal of opioids, use of opioid alternatives and partial filling of prescriptions, and elaborate on abuse substances.


Attendees will gain a better understanding of alternative plans for opioid use, describe behavioral characteristics of drug-seeking patients, symptom manifestation, and identification of patients with SUD/ OUDs, and conclude with recommendations for best practice guidelines by CDC/ADA when prescribing controlled substances.


The course will discuss the utilization of PDMP (Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs), describe the potency of combination opioid preparations and safe combination dosages, and discuss the CDC’s role in creating the National Drug Code to establish MME (Morphine Mg Equivalent) conversion factors for safe prescribing of controlled substances and prevention of overdose-related death.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Describe safe and competent use of opioids for managing acute, moderate & severe dental pain
  • Discuss Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
  • Discuss misuse of prescription opioids and the opioid crisis in the US
  • Identify signs of chronic opioid use and learn about CDC/ ADA recommendations
  • Identify and educate patients at high risk of OUD and opioid overdose
  • Describe serious drug interactions of opioids with other controlled substances
  • Discuss alternate drugs for acute and chronic pain management in the dental patient
