DEA MATE Compliance Part 2: Safe Opioid Prescribing with Case Studies

Course Description
The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act 2023 requires controlled substance prescription training for DEA registered Dental practitioners. This includes a one-time 8-hour training requirement on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
The course will describe substances of abuse that dental patients may be taking and the potential of life-threatening drug interactions of these substances with prescribed controlled drugs.
Participants will gain a better understanding of the legal guidelines established by dental boards for counseling patients on proper storage and safe disposal of opioids, use of opioid alternatives and partial filling of prescriptions and elaborate on substances of abuse.
The course will describe alternative plans for opioid use, describe behavioral characteristics of drug-seeking patients, symptom manifestation and identification of patients with SUD/ OUDs, and conclude with recommendations for best practice guidelines by CDC/ADA when prescribing controlled substances.
Course Objectives
At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
- Discuss safe pharmacological management of dental pain with emphasis on screening, brief intervention and referral for patients at risk of opioid and other substance use disorders
- Review common drug interactions between opioid analgesics and substances of abuse
- Discuss Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), misuse of prescription opioids and opioid deaths in the US
- Describe Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and discuss identification and management of SUDs
- Identify and educate patients at high risk of OUD and opioid overdose
