Autism Spectrum Disorder and Other Disabilities

Live, Interactive Webcast Continuing Education Course – 3 Hours Credits

Instructor: Dr. Amy Berger

Course Description:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a very common and often misunderstood syndrome. Today, at least 1 in 44 children is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined.

This course examines the medical, psychological and societal challenges faced by individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. We will review the most common educational, dietary and drug modalities used to assist ASD individuals, and how the dental team can best treat ASD individuals. This includes how to facilitate good dental home care, and when to refer specific cases to a pediatric specialist.

In addition, other disabilities’ impact on the dental office will be examined. These include Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, ADD/ADHD and Dementia.

After completing this course, the clinician will be able to:

  1. Describe the symptoms and traits of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  2. Discuss the most common communication, social, and behavioral problems associated with ASD.
  3. Discuss the treatment modalities used to assist people with ASD.
  4. Discuss the current controversies about ASD (causes and treatments).
  5. Describe methods for successfully treating people with ASD in the dental office.
  6. Understand other disabilities: Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD and Dementia and their impact on the dental office.

About Live, Interactive Webcast Continuing Education Seminars:

A live, interactive webcast seminar is similar to attending a continuing education seminar in your community, except that you attend via your computer. Each course is done live in a format that allows your participation.

Anyone who has access to a computer that can play sound can participate in an ACES webcast seminar. No special computer knowledge or equipment is required to participate in our webcast seminars.

When you enroll in any ACES webcast course, you will be sent an e-mail with complete information on how to join the online seminar and a copy of the course syllabus. At the conclusion of your live seminar, you will complete a course examination online. You will then be able to print your continuing education certificate from your computer.
