In the US, healthcare has typically been fragmented, with ~109 million patients seeing a medical provider each year without seeing a dentist, and ~29 million seeing a dental provider without seeing a medical provider.[1]
These numbers represent missed opportunities for medical providers to engage patients in education, screening, preventive measures, and referral to dental professionals, as well as the untapped potential of the dental office for contributions to screening and management of chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension and other chronic health conditions.
