Abuse, Neglect and Trafficking: Our Responsibility

The presenters will discuss the physical, behavioral, and emotional indicators of both child and elder abuse and neglect. We will highlight the characteristics typically presented by parents or caregivers that may lead the dental team member to suspect abuse. The presenters will guide attendees through case studies leading to greater insight to identify potential abuse and neglect. The presenters will identify federal and regional resources available to assist the oral health professional while providing support to the survivor. Additionally, the attendees will explore risk factors and indicators for suspected human trafficking victims in their communities.

Speakers:
Denise M. Messina, MDH, BS, RDH is an Assistant Professor – Clinical at The Ohio State University, Division of Dental Hygiene in Columbus, OH where she teaches dental hygiene undergraduate, graduate and dental students. She is the course director for Oral Radiology, Contemporary Issues in Dental Hygiene, Oral Health and Disease Prevention, Care for Patients with Special Needs and Practice Management. She also cares for patients one day/week at the OSU Dental Faculty Practice. Prior to Ohio State, she taught dental hygiene for 22 years at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, OH and spent 30 years in private clinical practice.
Bridget M. Wright, MACPR, BSDH, EFDA is an assistant clinical professor at The Ohio State University, Division of Dental Hygiene in Columbus, OH where she teaches dental hygiene and expanded functions dental auxiliary students. She is the course director for Dental Anatomy and Expanded Functions Dental Auxiliary courses. Prior to joining the faculty, she practiced as a dental hygienist and EFDA. Currently, she provides care for patients in the Dental Oncology Clinic at OSU one day/week.
